Noma’s journey with ELLA began by taking classes from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension program for mature students. When the U of A was no longer able to continue this program, many of the 50+ students got together and formed a Board. Partnerships with liaisons within the U of A were created and ELLA’s first in person Spring Session took place in 2002. As a founding member, Noma served as a volunteer in many capacities, including the Education Committee and Publicity Committee as chair.
Noma’s favourite class was Art History. While taking this class, she met many like-minded individuals, and six of them bonded and travelled together for 13 years to Art History Museums throughout the United States and Canada.
When choosing a class Noma looks for something that she can learn, regardless of discipline. “I do like political classes and I enjoy a great debate!”
Noma enjoys enrolling in the winter online sessions for a number of reasons. Many are recorded, and if you miss the time slot for the class you can watch it later. You can participate in the safety of your own home during inclement weather and watch at your leisure.
Noma has met many people at ELLA and considers many very good lifelong friends. “There are people attending ELLA from all walks of life, some have post-secondary education, some don’t, or they are self-educated. It doesn’t matter, we are all on the same horizon of lifelong learning and forming new friendships.”
“I’ve just loved ELLA! I have loved every minute of it. Sharing ideas with fellow members and exploring new things.”
