In my late forties, I was so jealous of my older friends who regaled me with their yearly ELLA adventures, from the online courses in the winter to the amazing three weeks attending in-person courses at the University of Alberta every spring. As soon as I was able, I registered for my first ELLA classes, and have been attending ever since.
Some courses I’ve taken just for interest’s sake, like Forensic Anthropology (I’m certainly not planning to become an amateur crime investigator in my retirement!) But other courses have provided me with practical knowledge that I’ve been able to apply to my everyday life: learning to use my camera properly in Photography has been invaluable in my travels and closer to home, and Marvels of Mathematics has provided me with all sorts of “mathemagic” tricks that I use when I tutor to make math more engaging.
Now, I never miss a chance to tell anyone I know who might be in their early fifties or approaching retirement about ELLA, and I think I’ve recruited a few classmates!
