Julia Boberg is a true lifelong learner. She was taking University of Alberta Extension classes before ELLA came into being. When a friend – one of ELLA’s earliest board members—told her about this new organization dedicated to learning for older adults, she knew it was exactly what she had been waiting for. She signed up and twenty-five years later continues to take a variety of classes every year.
Known affectionately as a “perpetual student”, Julia’s curiosity has taken her far beyond her own academic background in French and law. She has taken many in-person classes every spring and Zoom courses in the winter, but most enjoys in-person classes, the camaraderie of her classmates and meeting new people.
Julia delights in exploring new topics – an engineering course surprised her with how fascinating it was to learn about the way bridges are constructed! Line dancing, art appreciation and Michael Roeder’s beloved music classes have been favourites. Her learning journey is far from over—she is always excited to find new classes that interest her.
Julia hopes ELLA will continue far into the future since it not only benefits students but the professors as well, as it allows them to explore new ideas and new ways of teaching.
