This course will explore exciting and fascinating works for orchestra by Debussy, Ravel, Mahler, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Bartók, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Ives, Gershwin, and Copland. Following an introduction to the orchestra, we will learn about the backgrounds of the composers, their approaches to composition and the orchestra and dig into some of their masterworks to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for this amazing music. Audio and video recordings will bring this music to life.
Instructor:Â Dr. Michael Roeder
Michael Roeder taught the history of classical music and jazz at the University of Alberta for more than three decades. He received numerous awards for his teaching, including a 3M Teaching Fellowship which is awarded to Canada’s top university teachers. He has a passion for teaching and music and has taught for ELLA since 2012. His scholarly work includes articles on Brahms, Ellington, and a major book, A History of the Concerto.
