Good nutrition is essential for healthy aging. Low muscle mass is an important health issue for older adults to be aware of. Untreated low muscle mass can lead to functional decline and other health problems. This course will address the importance of muscle mass for older adults, and how nutrition can be used to optimize muscle health. There will be a focus on protein intake as a key building block of muscle, how to understand protein requirements and practical ways to meet protein needs. This course will consist of both lecture-based content and interactive, hands-on activities including label reading, adapting recipes and some fun with nutrition karaoke. It will also incorporate expert guest lecturers and a field trip to the Human Nutrition Research Unit on campus.
