We will look at early Christianity and the construction of the New Testament. Archeologists, historians and philologists of the 20th and 21st Centuries have profoundly transformed our understanding of the first century of Christianity. How many ‘Gospels’ are there? Who wrote them? Did all the early Christian communities understand the same message? Was there a single teaching? These are some of the topics we will explore in this course. We’ll also challenge ideas about what Christianity was before it became the official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century.

Instructor: Francois V. Pageau

Dr. Francois V. Pageau received a PhD in history from the University of Alberta. After a career at CBC/Radio-Canada, he started teaching history and political science at the U of A in 2015. He specializes in intellectual history.
