This course will trace the development of the dynamic and evolving concerto form from its beginnings in Italy around 1680 to examples from the 20th century that exhibit influences of jazz. We will explore works by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Ravel. Excellent audio and video recordings will enliven our study.
