While there are a number of carving disciplines, including architectural carving (both high and bas-reliefs), chip carving, and whittling, the most often cited is carving in the round. In this course, we will focus on carving in the round technique, and you will complete at least one 3-dimensional object. I encourage all those interested to contact me before the course to narrow down design options, as they are truly endless! My carvings tend to be ornate spoons (Welsh Love Spoons), but shelf ornaments are always popular. We will also take time to practice sharpening our implements, including knives, chisels, and gouges, as a sharp tool is not only more satisfying to use, but safer! If you fall in love with carving, we will ensure that your future efforts are met with success and joy!
* Special note: this course will require some hand strength, so please take that into consideration.
Instructor:Â Niall Capstick
Niall Capstick has been carving for nearly a quarter of a century, having first learned woodturning and the craft of carving Love Spoons from his Uncle Dave in Wales. There is little he enjoys more, however, than the opportunity to share his passion and knowledge with others. This will be his second year with ELLA; last year’s ball-in-cage proved a bit more challenging as an introduction than anticipated, but demonstrating (he hopes!) that he can be taught, we will focus on producing a carved shelf ornament or ornate spoon through this year’s offer.
