Whether you want to pen a children’s picture book, a middle-grade mystery, or a young adult fantasy, this course will equip you with the tools to capture the hearts and minds of young readers. Kids’ author Marty Chan breaks down children’s book categories and identifies the key elements that shape stories appealing to today’s audiences. He’ll review the writing basics for any participants who did not attend his previous ELLA course (Kid Stuff). For previous attendees, he’ll focus specifically on middle-grade and young adult novels. Marty will share tips on crafting authentic voices, creating effective pacing, and blending action with descriptive details. As an optional bonus, attendees who wish to share their writing excerpts (no more than five pages) will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their work.

Instructor:  Ink Jockey Incorporated – Marty Chan

Marty Chan has published 22 books for kids of all ages, including his bestselling young adult novel, Haunted Hospital, and his award-winning comedy, The Mystery of the Graffiti Ghoul. A fixture in Alberta’s literary community, he received the Golden Pen for his contributions as a writer, playwright, screenwriter and community connector. Marty has presented to students both in-person and virtually around the world. He’s best recognized as an author who can win over reluctant readers and writers. He works and lives in Edmonton with his wife Michelle and their two cats.
