Whether you want to pen a children’s picture book, a middle-grade mystery, or a young adult fantasy, this course will equip you with the tools to capture the hearts and minds of young readers. Kids’ author Marty Chan breaks down children’s book categories and identifies the key elements that shape stories appealing to today’s audiences. He’ll review the writing basics for any participants who did not attend his previous ELLA course (Kid Stuff). For previous attendees, he’ll focus specifically on middle-grade and young adult novels. Marty will share tips on crafting authentic voices, creating effective pacing, and blending action with descriptive details. As an optional bonus, attendees who wish to share their writing excerpts (no more than five pages) will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their work.
