Science emerges from the complex interplay between culture, history and the often-fascinating lives of the scientists who spawned these ideas. In this eclectic course we will explore some of the key ideas of western science and how these were both shaped by and in turn shaped the culture from which they emerged. No science background is required but we will develop some of the science as we go along!

Instructor: Brian Martin

Brian Martin is a retired astrophysicist and science educator who has also had a lifelong fascination with how science intersects with culture. For more than 35 years he taught astronomy, physics and mathematics at The King’s University and enjoyed weaving music and art into his lectures.
