Last year’s ELLA course, ‘Economics for Everyone’, was about the story of economics – an overview of economic ideas from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II. This year, in ‘The Principles’, we will revisit that narrative in the context of the assumed collected wisdom of mainstream economics. Mankiw’s 10 principles from his best-selling ECON 101 textbook will be critically viewed through pluralist perspectives. Disney animations will be used to frame the critique of the 10 principles and the emphasis will remain on topical issues – degrowth, inequality, work, and debt. This course is for everyone, whether you took last year’s course or not: while there might be some overlap, new concepts and alternate principles will be built from scratch.
