This course will teach participants the fundamental skills in using the Chinese brush and ink. You will learn how to hold the brush and manipulate it to make a variety of strokes. With this basic skill, you can draw and paint some simple oriental paintings. We are working with ink and no colours involved. The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting, the classical Chinese painting manual, will be introduced and you will have the opportunity to practise simple brush works such as painting orchid and bamboo. The Four Treasures of the Orient will also be introduced. The aesthetics and philosophical framework of the Orient will be discussed and shown how they impact the making of art in the East and the West. Practising the oriental brush work with intention and concentration could enhance your overall well-being as well as your creativity, intuition and spontaneity in art making.
